Winches and related hardware
The front winch
The venerable Warn 8274, I found a bargain thanks to a friend,
and came home with a 2 weeks old 8274 used for the RFC Italian selections.
I found a 6Hp Warn motor (thanks Will!!) and fitted it along with a proper self-locking hook
and a coupling link.
And an ATV sized winchsaver.
The 8274 sits very high on a custom made bumper made of 5mm thick stainless steel, with tapered ends
and incorporated recovery points.
The cradle is gusseted wherever possible for maximum strenght and rigidity.
The rear winch
It's a Superwinch Husky, traded for a company logo for David Bowyer at Goodwinch, thanks David!
Goodwinch provided Dyneema rope as well.
Choosen because of the unique worm drive system present on Superwinch "Husky" series winches,
which allows for long, continuous operation that would quickly overload many other commercial winches.
Their heavy duty worm gear drive allows them to be used for
long durations under near constant use that would overheat and burnout lesser winches, and
makes them the preferred choice amongst winch challenge competitors who fit them at the rear.
No risk of drum getting hot and ruining synthetic ropes, and no fear of brake failure when
unspooling to lower the truck down a steep slope.
The Husky 8 is built with a 2.1 HP series wound motor which is mated to
a 229:1 ratio worm gear drive, giving a rated line pull of 8,500 lbs,
with a stall load of 9,200 lbs.
Last but not least, Superwinch's use for many years on the Camel Trophy is a testament to
the superior design and durability of these winches.
A bit of a pig to fit, I choosed a rear winch kit from Equipe 4x4,
only to find it's not compatible (D'OH!) so I kept the weld-on brackets and had a custom cradle made.
The kit allows to keep and shut the tailgate.
ATV sized winchsaver for the rope.
